Latest NDIS news: what the September 2026 updates may mean for participants

Support budget changes start from 1 October 2026
The Australian Government has announced changes to some NDIS supports from 1 October 2026. The affected budget areas are social, economic and community participation supports, and improved daily living skills supports.
The changes will be introduced gradually over 12 months. They will apply as plans are created or reassessed from 1 October 2026, or renewed from 1 February 2027. Participants can continue using their current plan and supports until their plan is reassessed or renewed.
The government says the impact will be different for each participant because plans are based on individual goals, circumstances and support needs. The update also says safeguards will be in place, including a new plan variation pathway for high support needs participants with 24-hour disability support needs.
NDIS pricing consultation is open
The NDIA has opened consultation for the 2027-28 Annual Pricing Review. Participants, providers and the wider disability community can have their say until 1 November 2026.
The review will look at whether current pricing arrangements support access to quality services and whether changes are needed for the 2027-28 financial year. The consultation includes commonly claimed supports such as disability support worker-related supports, supported independent living, therapy, social and community participation and support coordination.
Support coordination is being redesigned
The Australian Government is also consulting on a future NDIS support coordination and connection service. A new commissioned service is proposed from 1 July 2028, replacing the way participants currently receive support coordination services.
The consultation is asking what the service should do, how providers should be commissioned, how quality and safeguarding should work, how demand could be managed and how people could transition to the new model. Consultation closes at 11.59 pm AEST on 2 October 2026.
Proposed NDIS access changes are open for feedback
Consultation is open on proposed changes to how people access the NDIS. The government says the aim is to make access decisions clearer, fairer and more consistent, with a focus on how disability affects everyday life.
This may be important for people applying to the NDIS, families helping someone through access, and providers supporting people with evidence and daily living information. Public consultation closes at 11.59 pm AEDT on 2 October 2026.
Integrity action remains a major theme
